Bangladesh win bronze in Archery Asia Cup

Bangladesh defeated Australia narrowly by 5-4 sets to secure the bronze medal

Bangladesh recurve men’s team clinched third spot to win bronze at the 2023 Archery Asia Cup in Singapore Saturday.

The competition is also considered the third stage of the World Ranking Tournament under World Archery Asia which began last Monday.

The recurve team comprising Sagor Islam, Hakim Ahmed Rubel and Ramkrishna Saha defeated Australia narrowly by 5-4 sets to secure the bronze medal.

The game ended in a 4-4 draw in the normal phase before Bangladesh clinched victory in the tiebreaker.

Meanwhile, Chinese archers won gold while India finished second to grab silver.

A 15-member Bangladesh team participated in the tournament where a total of 24 countries from Asia and two from Oceania took part.

The team will return home Sunday afternoon.

Bangladesh team comprising Hakim Ahmed Rubel, Sagor Islam and Ramkrishna Saha made it into the quarter-final of the recurve team event at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Antalya, Turkey.

They first ranked 10th out of 28 teams in the qualification round with a score of 1972 before beating Ukraine by 6-2 in the opening elimination round.

In the pre-quarterfinal, they outplayed Spain by same 6-2 margin to reach the top eight but lost to China 2-6 in the quarter-final.

Meanwhile in the recurve mixed team event, Rubel and Diya Siddique placed 26th out of 33 teams in the qualification round.

Mohammad Hakim Ahmed Rubel placed among top 10 archers in the recurve men’s qualification round of the 2023 Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Antalya, Turkey Wednesday.
Rubel ranked ninth out of 133 participants with a score of 670, while the top three archers scored 688, 687 and 679 respectively.

He will face Japan’s Nakanishi Junya, ranked 56th, in the 1/32 elimination round Friday after beating Slovakian archer Luka Arnez by 6-4 in the opening elimination round

Other Bangladeshi archer in the same event, Sagor Islam emerged 36th in the qualification round and beat Colombia’s Santiago Arcila (93rd) by 7-3 in the elimination round.

Country’s premier female archer Diya Siddique however, was not at her best as she ranked 76th out of 105 players in the qualification round of women’s recurve event

She scored 620 and bowed out in the elimination round.

Puspita Zaman and Mohammad Ashikuzzaman duo set a new national record in the compound mixed team event at the 2023 Archery World Cup, Stage 1 which is taking place in Antalya, Turkey.

The archery pair scored a total of 1384 to finish 21st out of 26 teams, and broke the old record of 1382 set by Mithu Rahman and Sushmita Banik at the National Archery Championships in 2019.

In the qualification round of men’s compound singles section, Ashikuzzaman scored 701 out of 720 to emerge 46th out of 86 participants, while Puspita posted 683 to be placed 48th out of 65 in the women’s event.

Archery federation temporarily suspends Ruman ban

The federation had suspended Ruman in November, 2022 for 2 years due to repeated breaches of discipline in the archery camp.

Ace archer Ruman Shana’s two-year long ban has been relaxed by Bangladesh Archery Federation following an emergency executive committee meeting Tuesday.

The federation suspended Ruman in November, 2022 for two years due to repeated breaches of discipline in the archery camp.

According to a press release by the federation, Ruman appealed for leniency following which the executive committee decided to ease the punishment.

The 27-year old will now have access to training facilities but it will be non-residential.

He will also be allowed to take part in upcoming trial and ranking tournaments.
