After a six-year wait, a glimmer of optimism emerged on January 21 of this year with the announcement that there are no longer any obstacles preventing the release of Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s film “Saturday Afternoon” (Shonibar Bikel).
The long-awaited film “Saturday Afternoon” by renowned filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, entangled in a censorship dispute for over four years, is at last set to reach global audiences through the Indian OTT platform Sony LIV.
The director confirmed this on Wednesday in a post on his official Facebook profile.
turday Afternoon is coming to an OTT Sony LIV, finally on November 24. The film can be watched from any other country in the world, except from Bangladesh,” Farooki stated in the post.
While the highly anticipated release in Bangladesh did not materialize, local audiences were treated to a sneak peek of the film in February of this year when its trailer was unveiled.
Featuring an ensemble cast of seasoned actors including Mamunur Rashid, Zahid Hasan, Intekhab Dinar, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Iresh Zaker, and Nusrat Imrose Tisha, among others, the one-shot film was released in March in the USA and Canada, garnering critical acclaim.Based on the Holey Artisan massacre that occurred in Gulshan in 2016, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s eighth directorial film, “Saturday Afternoon” (Shonibar Bikel), a collaborative effort between Bangladesh, Germany, and Russia, has been in a prolonged state of limbo, facing censorship denial for the past four years.
